Respectful discipline. Corporate education is devouring our children — specifically — our neediest children. In long-term practice, the strategies are overly authoritarian and reduce student self-advocacy. Lemov is very interested in teachers being able to quickly see the answers students are writing as they walk around the room — this is why he prefers standardization of note taking. Rather than "cheap praise," precise praise is valued by students because it describes what it is you are pleased with. The children have no emotion.

These classrooms feel more like boot camp. Additionally, for anyone lacking classroom management, the book has a wealth of resources. Where are the chatty children who are engaged in learning as they lean over a project or book? The fact that I have to explain this in a blog clearly signals a very sad period of time in the history of public education in our country. And where are the sad children who need the extra moment to talk quietly with the teacher about how they were up all night due to a parental fight? Technique Call and Response.

Often we get caught up in the material rather than the end goal. I see so many teachers I watch use it. For example, Technique 28, Entry Routine, calls on the teacher to establish efficient, productive habits as class begins. If I am required to sit still for too long I ultimately feel very agitated. In order to be equitable we must discern what is just and right for each student. Mindset: The new psychology for success.

Dweck, C. I think the strategies are good for a beginner, but my experience over time demonstrated the flaws in Lemov's overall philosophy. Positive Framing means casting things in a way that is positive and leads to appropriate behavior.

When children are forced to comply with such great constraints and boundaries I can imagine that after awhile the emotion is beaten out of them.

Technique The J Factor. I was surprised that in today's data-driven school climate the only data he gives to back up the benefits of rows is, " If you teach, you know that "low performance" is 1 problematic at best as a phrase, and 2 has a zillion other factors besides the teacher. And where are the sad children who need the extra moment to talk quietly with the teacher about how they were up all night due to a parental fight?

Lemov's microscopic attention to detail pays off here. It was one of my favorite words as well On the other hand, teachers also don't give students time to shape a complete, thoughtful response to a question. I want them to be able to move around the room as needed to meet their personal needs.
